Last Spring, as we were doing one of our preparatory trips to Lake George for Ohana, we stopped in for dinner at Common Roots Brewery in South Glen Falls (our review here). At that visit, I had noticed that Common Roots (whose brewery building itself is relatively new) had been on quite the building spree. Across the parking lot from their main brewery, Common Roots also runs their Bierhall & Barrel House Private Event Center, which in the mornings also operates as Common Roots Café for breakfast. The space is quite nice, albeit extremely cavernous when not being used for events. Since I was passing through South Glens Falls in early September on my way to the Adirondacks, I decided it was a great opportunity to stop in for coffee and breakfast.
While it feels a bit weird walking into an almost cavernous space just to order a light breakfast, the staff was very friendly, serving me up a really nice cup of coffee as I looked over their breakfast menu. They’ve got a selection of breakfast sandwiches, power bowls, burritos, and granola available, with all the eggs and meats locally-sourced, everything cooked to order, and they are quite flexible in letting you combine pretty much anything on the menu.
I ended up going for a breakfast burrito, and they really do a good job offering customized burritos, with three choices of protein (sausage, bacon, or black bean), several cheese choices including local cheddar and gouda, and sauce choices including hot sauce, pesto, kimchi aioli, or chipotle aoili. And you get crisp, grill-smashed potatoes as either a side or built into your burrito. About the only thing I might wish for that wasn’t on the menu was chorizo. I ended up going pretty classic with a breakfast sausage, cheddar, and egg burrito with some hot sauce, watching as the cook scrambled the eggs and fried up the sausage to order.
Taking my burrito outside to enjoy sitting in an Adirondack chair sitting by one of the outdoor fire pits, I found that I really enjoyed this burrito. A nicely done and not overcooked fresh scramble, a nicely seared sausage, a good cheddar, and the outer tortilla just lightly seared on the grill, this hit the spot. And you’ve got to enjoy the ability to sit outside and enjoy the fire pits on a cool, crisp early fall morning.
I really liked my breakfast, and it’s good to know that alongside the great lunch, dinner, and beer offerings at the main brewery and biergarten across the parking lot, Common Roots has a great breakfast now, too.
