Miss Bellows Falls Diner (Bellows Falls, VT)

(Update: The Miss Bellows Falls Diner closed at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, and an effort to purchase and reopen the diner in 2022 has fallen short, so for now, the diner remains closed, and if it reopens, it will be with a new owner).

Well, until the Farmers Diner opens next month, the list of Diners I haven’t reviewed has grown mighty short, so I figured I’d write up some diners that aren’t exactly local, but you might happen across in your travels.

So, traveling down I-91, in Bellows Falls there is the Miss Bellows Falls Diner on 90 Rockingham Street (right in downtown). Miss Bellows Falls (MBF) is actually a fairly notable diner in that (a) it’s an almost completely intact Worcestor Diner Car (#771) n faithfully maintained condition , and (b) it’s on the National Register of Historic Places (and, like all the other diners on the Register, claims it’s the only one…). But, in addition to just the architectural and historical interest, it’s also a pretty good place to eat.

Pros:

1. I’ve always been happy with the food here, particularly the lunches (it’s not often that I make it down to Bellows Falls for breakfast…). In fact, one of the best roast beef sandwiches I’ve had in recent history was here (with roasted red bell pepper), along with some very good fries.

2. It’s also one of the cheaper places to eat, with Carol and I running up a tab of about $12 last time we ate there.

3. People watching. This place is a magnet for just about every interesting person in Bellows Falls.

4. Location. MBF is also across the river from Walpole. Duck on over and get some hot chocolate at Burdick’s in downtown Walpole (I need to write them up separately, probably with a list of other cool places on I-91).

Cons:

No real cons, except that it’s even more of a haul from the UV than most of the other diners.

So, next time you’re driving south on I-91, this diner is a good stopping place.
